School Phys Ed Enhancement Program

As a multi-recreational facility, FLC is able to design and meet a wide selection of program needs.   In addition to our new state of the art fitness centre, FLC has a beachfront entry wavepool, several large multi-purpose rooms ranging from 300 - 1,700 square feet, an arena, and a regular sized gymnasium suitable for basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and floor hockey.   

 

Our Fitness Centre is now a 13,500 sq ft "state of the art" facility, including treadmills, ellipticals, stairclimbers, a large free weight area, 3 lane walking/ running track, 75+ selectorized and plate loaded strength training machines, stretching and kickboxing areas and a full fitness assessment area. 

 

Our large fitness studio includes:  13 Trixter X-Bikes (simulates mountain biking), Pump It Up bars / plates, Yoga / Pilates equipment, heavy bags and speed bag for kickboxing, and a variety of equipment for various fitness classes.  Our smaller dance studio has mirrors on 3 walls and bars on 1 wall as well as a viewing area adjacent to studio. 

 

OVERVIEW OF FLC PROGRAM

 The Family Leisure Centre PE Curriculum Program is designed to support and enhance the existing school PE program.

How FLC will enhance your school program. 

 

We provide alternatives and value-added programs to compliment the school Physical Education programs by introducing students to a variety of fitness options that are not available or accessible through traditional school program curriculum.  This includes programs in our fitness centre, fitness studios and pool facility. Access to specialized equipment, facilities and instructors allows us to offer a complete range of alternative programs.

 

Access to our specialized facilities and programs allows schools to target needs, and select and offer their students options that meet a range of different needs.  Schools can identify their own specific objectives and select a program offering to meet any or all of these needs. 

 

Offering opportunities for sport specific training for athletes that are training at a competitive level in a specific sport, through access to our specialized facilities and personal trainer.

 

Offering opportunities for "girls only" fitness in a comfortable and adapted setting.  Classes such as pilates, yoga and weight training in a girls only environment offers a meaningful opportunity for females to focus on personal health and fitness in a non-threatening environment.

 

Supporting the existing curriculum emphasis on "lifelong" physical education by introducing and offering a program that will enable students to experience new experiences that will provide the base for life-long activies.

 

Offer creative "alternatives" for students who are not engaged in traditional physical education programs. This can include activities such as fencing, archery, karate and golf.                         

 

FLC PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS

 

Instructors will be selected from our large pool of qualified fitness professionals and personal training professionals that we employ, with an emphasis on identifying and selecting the best instructors to meet your program needs.

 

All of our fitness centre staff and personal trainers have a minimum level of certification.  We require as a minimum, a Kinesiology Degree or Personal Fitness Training accredited program from Mount Royal College, supplemented by specialized certifications such as Yoga, Pilates, along with several years of practical, hands-on work experience. 

 

Most importantly, all of our Fitness Centre staff will demonstrate their passion, dedication and enthusiasm as fitness leaders. 

 

PROGRAM OPTIONS

 

Pump It Up Class - Strength                     (Studio #1)

This class will include one hour of a strength-based workout.  A 10 lb. bar will be used with interchangeable weights.  The class will consist of a total body workout with abdominal work and stretching to complete the class.

A Personal Fitness Trainer will instruct the class.  Proper technique and format will be stressed throughout the class.

  

Pump It Up Class - Endurance                 (Studio #1)

This class will follow the same format as the Pump-strength class but with a focus on high reps.

A full body workout will be achieved by completing reps that last for 4-5 minutes.

The class will be choreographed to music using a variety of tempos.

The trainer / instructor will discuss with the students the difference between strength and endurance.

 

Circuit Training - Fitness Centre              (Fitness Centre)

This high energy workout combines cardio and strength training for a one-of-a kind training method.  A Personal Fitness Trainer will lead the students through a variety of strength training exercises combined with high level 2 minute cardio intervals.

The selectorized circuit training area on the weight room floor will be utilized for strength training exercises.

The cardio component will be achieved using a variety of methods - running track, upright bikes, rowers, skipping, steps, etc.

 

Circuit Training                                        (Studio #1)

The format for the Cardio circuit is similar to the Fitness Centre circuits - the main difference being the equipment used.

2-3 minute circuits at individual stations, then 3 minute cardio bursts as a group combine for a high energy workout.

Equipment used in the Cardio Circuit - steps / risers, track, therabands, light weights, bosu balls, medicine balls, heavy bags & gloves.

 

TRIXTER X-Bikes                                      (Studio #1)

A total body workout, cardio and core training, all while simulating the mountain bike experience.

A trained X-Bike instructor will lead the group of 12 students on a road journey through meadows, up hills, down ravines and finally to the final goal - a complete workout.  The class is set to music, which mimics the energy level of that phase - uphill, downhill, coasting. The abdominal / core workout comes into play when handle bars are used to reach the top of the mountain.

This class is an excellent training tool for all sports and all fitness levels.

  

Pilates / Yoga                                          (Studio #1 or MP Room)

Join our certified instructors to unlock the keys to core stability, flexibility, balance and strength.  Breathing and relaxation techniques will be used to reduce stress as a way to improve one’s overall physical and mental well-being.

 

Cardio Dance                                          (Studio #1)

An hour of Latin, hip hop and various types of dance movements in an aerobic format.  Learn great dance steps while revving up your heart rate and toning your muscles.  This class is a great example of how an everyday activity - dancing - can be turned into a great physical workout.

 

Boxer’s Workout                                      (Studio #1)

An invigorating workout, which includes punches and kicks incorporating muscle conditioning for a total body workout.

Team Training Programs

This program can be sport specific for a school team or can introduce students to the world of team sport training - "train like an athlete".

 

The students will utilize the following equipment:

-          Running track                - selectorized strength equipment

-          Plate-loaded strength equipment      - reaction belts (used outdoors)

-          Agility ladders              - medicine balls,     

-          Resistance belts      and more

 

These sessions will open up the student’s mind to a different and unique way of training for sports or a higher level of conditioning.  Certified Personal Fitness Trainers will instruct.

 

 

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

 

Aquafit Classes

The properties of water provide a unique training venue for students of all fitness levels.  Utilizing an aqua belt or water noodle, the students will perform muscle training movements without any of the stress of dryland training.

 

Karate - Self Defence
FLC's own Karate instructor will lead the students through the basics of The properties of water

FLC’s own Karate instructor will lead the students through the basics of Karate movements while focusing on self-discipline and self
motivation.
